Physical Activity

In the United States, the number of children with obesity has increased over the past two decades. Obesity in childhood can pose both immediate and long term risks and can cause lifelong issues for children as they grow.

Regular physical activity is necessary for a child’s development as it helps strengthen bones, decrease blood pressure and reduces stress and anxiety. Children who are more physically active tend to have higher self-esteem and have better weight management. The best way to get kids moving is by modeling positive behavior. When kids see their parents, teachers or other caregivers physically active, the children will be positively influenced to keep active. Additionally, if kids grow up in an active lifestyle, they are more likely to stay active as they become adults.

Recommended Levels for Preschool-Aged Children (ages 3 through 5 years)

  • Preschool-aged children (ages 3 through 5 years) should be physically active throughout the day for growth and development.
  • Adult caregivers should encourage active physical movement during play time.

Recommended Levels for School-Aged Children and Adolescents (ages 6 through 17 years)

Children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 years should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity each day. At least three days a week, activities should include aerobic activity (activity that increases your heart rate), bone-strengthening activities (like running or jumping), and muscle-strengthening activities (like climbing or doing push-ups).

Adults need 150 minutes of moderately intense aerobic activity each week and 2 days of muscle-strengthening exercises.
